TuneCore Live Artist Breakdown: Sam Outlaw, Alexander Cardinale, & George Byrne

Riding high off our TuneCore Live Austin party during SXSW, we’re psyched to keep the momentum rolling with tomorrow night’s return to the Bardot in Hollywood! This week’s TuneCore Live event aims to highlight three TuneCore Artists with more of a folky and country vibe – the perfect soundtrack for a cool late-March evening in Los Angeles!

With the help of Swisher Sweets, CraveOnline and Mirrored Media, we’ve invited Sam Outlaw, Alexander Cardinale, and George Byrne to share the stage for a night of music, drinks, and fun. We’re also excited to announce that Griffin and Taylor of Dawes will be contributing a surprise DJ set! If you’re a LA-based TuneCore Artist, we wanna see you come out – our LA staff and sponsors will be on the ground to hang out, talk about your future, and answer questions. The event is FREE tomorrow, March 31, and begins at 8pm at Bardot. Keep in mind that the past two Bardot events have hit capacity, so you may want to hop over early!

So scroll on down to hear and learn more about this month’s awesome line-up and see how they have leaned on TuneCore during their musical journeys:

Sam Outlaw is not actually a felon. Rather, he’s a South Dakota-raised independent country artist based in Los Angeles, (‘Outlaw’ is in fact his mother’s maiden name). Sam Outlaw is relatively new to Southern California’s music scene, but with 2014-15 resulting in two well received music videos and a series of single/EP releases distributed via TuneCore, he’s well on his way!
“TuneCore has been a huge part of my 2014/2015 story. They’ve always been my solution for digital distribution of my music and now with TuneCore as my publishing admin team, they’ve helped me get three song syncs. These syncs have provided me money to live and breathe and finish my album. I couldn’t be more thankful for their support.”

Australian-born, LA-based artist George Byrne has a penchant for playing folky, country-laced Americana, but that doesn’t stop him from channeling influences ranging from early 90’s indie staples to classic rock giants like Pink Floyd. Check out his latest single below, distributed via TuneCore.

“Musically, for me personally [being independent] means being severely restricted in terms of the size and scope of what I’m able to achieve as an artist but also completely free and not answering to anyone about what I release and when. There are pros and cons. [TuneCore] has been a huge help in promoting the product.”

Alexander Cardinale - 2015 copy
Singer/songwriter Alexander “Xander” Cardinale writes and performs thoughtful, contagious pop songs that, on top of generating radio spins, have been licensed for numerous popular television shows like “One Tree Hill” and “90210”. In fact, in 2015 alone Cardinale has secured one of his latest songs, “Made For You”, a spot on the hit NBC program “The Mysteries of Laura”!

“I think it’s become black and white, the way we define indie from major. Because seemingly you are signed to a major label or you are an independent artist. The real answer is that there are myriad different ways to be an independent artist. There’s such a large grey area between indie and major. To me, it’s a badge I don’t wear willingly, because although I’m not signed to a major label, I plan to be just as competitive.  Short and sweet, TuneCore has been my only distributor as long as I’ve been an artist distributing music – they’ve been a big help and very supportive!”

SXSW 2015 Recap!

Amidst the crowds of flustered music fans, rows of bars with live music blaring out of open doors, networking industry folks, chattering panelists, and overwhelmed indie artists, the TuneCore team was holding it down during SXSW 2015! With one-third of all artists who performed this year having distributed through TuneCore, this was the perfect time to expand on our TuneCore Live event series and offer some of them the opportunity to get on stage and play for fresh faces.

We were also psyched to sponsor some day parties and showcases held by likeminded, pro-independent brands that put together equally killer line-ups! BrooklynVegan, Nettwerk Music Group, and CraveOnline provided SXSW attendees a chance to discover new acts and enjoy some of their favorites, and TuneCore was proud to partner with them. Thanks to the help of sponsors like Swisher Sweets, we were able to expand our presence with a street team, hand out some cool free swag, and put together an awesome event.

On top of the live events, we officially launched the DropKloud app! DropKloud, acquired by TuneCore in late 2014, is an innovative app that provides fans with access to exclusive, artist-curated “Kloud” content dropped at different locations. We had over 40 Klouds across downtown Austin including the world premiere of Angelique Kidjo and ZZ Ward’s track, “Bomba”. We encourage TuneCore Artists to grab free download of DropKloud, available via the iTunes Store and Google Play!

Being a leader in digital music distribution, SXSW couldn’t be all play and no work! Between meeting with store partners and artist services vendors, the TuneCore team was workin’ it to make sure our services remain ahead of the curve.

Chris Mooney, TuneCore’s Senior Director of Artist Promotions & Strategic Relationships said of the SXSW experience this year:

“It was amazing to finally see so many TuneCore Artists that I just discovered and have been working with over the years. The quality of the TuneCore line-up—Prinze George, Ultimate Painting, Sam Outlaw, Nova Rockafeller, Dear Boy, Devon Baldwin, G-Eazy, Olivver the Kid, and Derek Minor—is a testament to the amazing artists using our service.

Another highlight for me was wandering though Austin, and getting the shout outs from bands and fans when they saw me in my TuneCore t-shirt.”

Chief Creative Officer Joe Cuello on TuneCore’s presence at SXSW 2015:

“SXSW 2015 was amazing for TuneCore artists.  We had our artists just about everywhere and the talent at our first Tunecore Live Austin was incredible.
Independent music is alive and well and we can’t wait to continue offering opportunities for our artists to play live.”

To prove we didn’t spend the duration of SXSW 2015 drinking Lone Star and gorging on BBQ and fish Tacos, (though that sounds very pleasant), we’ve put together some photo galleries to browse through and relive some of the action!

SONGWRITER HIGHLIGHTS

Lenny Macaluso is a classic songwriter with featured works in Boogie Nights, Kickboxer, and cult classic Star Wars satire, Spaceballs. The Philly-bred maestro began his career as guitarist/music director for Tina Turner and continues to have songs placed by the TuneCore Creative team in projects such as MTV’s Lenny Macaluso
Ridiculousness and Fantasy Factory. More recently, in the months following the Boston Marathon tragedy, Macaluso teamed up with longtime collaborator Stan Bush on an inspirational rallying cry for the resilient American way of life titled “Unstoppable”.

TuneCore Music Publishing is thrilled to be involved in the budding career of Johnny Hwin and Brodie Jenkins who together form Cathedrals. The duo pens epic dream pop anthems and have seenJohnny Hwin and Brodie Jenkins consecutive singles skyrocket to the top of Hype Machine’s no remix list. After releasing their debut self-titled EP, securing multiple sync licenses and signing with the power house Neon Gold Records in 2014, Hwin and Jenkins are well on their way to indie-pop superstardom.

Sam Outlaw, self-described neo-traditionalist country writer,  creates original music that seeks to capture the spirit of the classic country music he learned from his favorite singers: George Jones, Sam OutlawWillie Nelson, Gene Watson, Don Williams, Keith Whitley, Dwight Yoakam, etc. After Outlaw earned a slot at The Stagecoach Festival in the Coachella Valley, he spent the summer writing for his upcoming full-length album, Angeleno, produced by music legend Ry Cooder (Buena Vista Social Club, Neil Young, Taj Mahal). Outlaw will also perform at the TuneCore Live: LA event on March 31.

In addition to our Sync & Master Licensing Database, our creative team continuously works to place TuneCore administered copyrights across all visual media.
