Instagram Introduces @Music Account

As you know, we’ve been doing our best to help TuneCore Artists shape and strengthen their social media marketing strategies here on the TuneCore Blog. Social is an increasingly important element of promoting your music and brand, and connecting with your fans. Instagram – now owned by Facebook – has become a major way independent artists engage with listeners, create excitement around their new releases, and share the visuals of their everyday lives. Some TuneCore Artists, such as Astronautalis, use it as a creative outlet to explore their interest in art and photography while doing all of the above!

Yesterday, Instagram’s CEO and founder Kevin Systrom unveiled the @music account, which is “dedicated to exploring music around the globe, from those who create it to the community around it.” While it’s assumed that Instagram will use this vertical to bring content from artists who are already household names, TechCrunch revealed that the account will be posting within specific series, designated by specific hashtags. Some mentioned included #LocallySourced (covering unsigned artists), #DoubleTrack (covering artists’ interests outside of music) and #15SecondLessons (instructional videos).

While we have yet to see how this will play out in terms of attracting new followers and acting as an avenue for music discovery, TechCrunch also pointed out that Instagram’s main account has 60 million followers, and they’ve continued to use this account to showcase creative efforts of everyday users.

“The music community is –– and always has been –– an important part of Instagram. For the past four years, we have become the home for artists big and small –– a place where people across the musical spectrum come to share stories, reveal their creativity and connect directly with fans,” says Systrom.

It’s certainly pointing towards what some have already figured out: music fans are using Instagram to connect with their favorite artists, whether it’s sharing photos from gigs or keeping up with them throughout their tours/projects/daily lives. We’re excited to see what kind of opportunities the @music account may provide to artists who use TuneCore!

TuneCore Artists Earn $36 Million in Q1 2015

New York, NY (April 29, 2015) – TuneCore, the premier digital music distribution and publishing administration service provider, announced today that artists have earned more than $36 million in Q1 of 2015, a 5% increase versus the same time 2014. Those earnings were driven by 2.8 billion downloads and streams. Since 2006, TuneCore Artists have earned over $541 million from over 15.2 billion downloads and streams.

The growth of international music consumption is fast becoming an important source of income for independent musicians. Putting Artists at the Forefront

TuneCore hit the ground running at the start of the New Year and launched an ambitious initiative to further bolster high-profile exposure opportunities for artists through a series of live performances, special events and strategic brand partnerships. The TuneCore Live monthly showcases kicked off these efforts and featured some of TuneCore’s best up-and-coming talent. The showcases consistently pack the historic Bardot Club in Hollywood and introduce attendees to a wide range of musicians, including, Olivver The Kid, Nova Rockafeller, Sam Outlaw and more! The successful TuneCore Live showcase also went down to Austin, Texas during SXSW Music in March (where 1/3 of the artists performing have distributed their music with TuneCore) and featured a full roster of exciting independent TuneCore artists.

Giving Fans VIP Access to Artists

DropKloud, an innovative free app that gives fans VIP access to exclusive artist-curated Kloud content, debuted at SXSW 2015. This unique platform allows fans to pick up Klouds from their favorite artists, giving them pre-release tracks, exclusive videos and photos. SXSW event attendees were able to access new music from artists like ZZ Ward and Angelique Kidjo as well as new talent playing at the TuneCore Live showcase.

Looking Forward

TuneCore will continue to focus on its key principle of getting more artists’ music to more people worldwide and providing the artists with the means and tools to build indie careers. Knowing the importance social media plays in promoting music, TuneCore Artists will soon be able to optimize the way they share their music across all their social media platforms with the new web application, MSCLVR.co. The DropKloud app will continue to add new functionality for even greater engagement for both the artist and the fan. Also look out for new initiatives to provide further high-profile exposure for artists.

“We’re so proud to see our artists succeeding and we’re thrilled to be able to offer them the continued support and tools needed to advance their careers,” said TuneCore CEO Scott Ackerman. “It is amazing to explore all the different ways independent artists can connect with fans, reach new audiences worldwide and maximize their earnings. It’s such a exciting time in the music industry and for TuneCore, building off of the strong start of the year, we are looking forward to even greater things to come in 2015.”

TuneCore Live Artist Breakdown: Andy Allo, Fire In The Hamptons, & Nova Rockafeller

We’re excited to be at the end of the month and getting ready to hit Bardot for another TuneCore Live event! Last month was a tremendous success, with three performers who brought the country and folk vibe to the stage. This Wednesday, April 29th, we’re stepping it up in the dance and funk department! With help from our awesome sponsors, Swisher Sweets, CraveOnline and Mirrored Media, we’re looking forward to another packed house.

In fact, if you’re an LA-based TuneCore Artist who hasn’t made it out to our TuneCore Live/Swisher Artist Project shows, what are you waiting for?! Come down, let us know what you’re up to, ask us questions, and share some fun – our west coast TuneCore team will be in attendance and are ready to kick it. Learn more about Andy Allo, Fire In The Hamptons and Nova Rockafeller after the jump…

Andy Allo is truly a jack of all trades: on top of being an accomplished singer/songwriter, pianist and guitarist, the Cameroonian-born artist also dabbles in modeling and television acting. After the release of Superconductor and UnFresh (both via TuneCore), we’re beyond pleased to be hosting Andy’s LA release show for her latest EP, Hello! Andy’s albums dance the lines of pop, funk and rock, and her pleasant, soulful voice floats smoothly over a variety of instrumental arrangements.

SHADOWS
Fire In The Hamptons is the brainchild of Zack Arnett, who in 2010 linked up with producer Bret Serlen to compose his debut release F.I.T.HAfter enlisting four talented musicians to bring Zack’s electro-pop vision to the stage, Fire In The Hamptons spent a couple of years licensing songs for television and building a fan base. A dedicated fan base, at that: in 2014, the group was able to release Chosen Ones after raising $15K during a Kickstarter campaign!

Nova1
‘Problem child’, laser tag enthusiast, self-proclaimed ‘nerdy art kid’ – Nova Rockafeller carries a variety of descriptors. What remains true is her performance talent and ability to write raw lyrics that resonate with fans, (’90s kids’ and ’00s kids’ alike!). With a reputation for the occasional punch-in-the-face and disregard for critics, Nova’s made it clear that it’s her world and we’re all just renting space in it.
