The Making of the Albums 'All Over But The Crying' 'Distant Kiss' 'Find Those Dreams'
Bud Shamble started out as a "high school gag name" that eventually took shape years later with Sergio Palumbo fronting the "pseaudym" for his catalogue of music." In the early nineties Sergio frequently visited Bob McLeod at his "Satellite Sound" recording studio in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.Bob had a wall full of vintage gear and worked closely with Serg's song writing. It was here that Sergio brought in different musicians to play on his songs and started producing and singing. The recordings began in 1993 and were completed in 1999. While attending The Recording Workshoppe in Chillicothe Ohio late Fall 1999, Sergio started the re-mastering process on all his analog tape recordings. The Recording Workshoppe atmosphere was a perfect compliment.
The album took the name "All Over But the Crying" hinting on the birth of digital and the demise of Analog. You also see reference to this on the album cover highlighting a "Wound Up Metronome". With the added guitar flair of Norm Rosteck and Serge's brother Peter Palumbo these classic songs were released. Lino D'Orazio long time friend shared bass on a majority of the songs and many studio drummers were added for recording purposes.
Throughout the late nineties and early 2000's you could hear "Reality" on the Al Joynes Q107 Toronto's Homegrown Segment and "Sweet Sunshine" rattling the airwaves throughout Northern Michigan on the top 200 play list crafted by Ray Bauer of 101.3 FM Sault Ste Marie Michigan. Bud Shamble sends out a Thank You to Ray Bauer for his dedicated support at the time.
Middle of Nowhere started as a cover band described as,"The best party band second to none around the twin Sault`s", and evolved into a sonic sounding studio band. Using old school recording techniques and a trouble-free song format the music jelled.
All the members gigged in Bud Shamble throughout the late nineties and all are no stranger to the diverse traditions of studio music recording. The Bud Shamble album “All Over But The Crying” carries a classic rock sound as opposed to the commercial pop rock format Middle Of Nowhere embarked on the Distant Kiss album. Middle Of Nowhere is a reference to the band member’s geographical location situated in the heart of the Great Lakes. With Sergio at the "front of the helm", he incorporated many original songs into both Bud Shamble and Middle of Nowhere live sets often placing them between crowd favourites like the Goo Goo Dolls and Three Doors Down.
Middle of Nowhere rehearsed once to twice a week for about 8 months at guitarist's Peter Palumbo's home basement referred to as “Peter's Place” for the making of Distant Kiss. A Special thanks goes out to his son Ryan for not waking up during our late night; school night; rehearsals. Bassist, Lino D'Orazio and drummer, Anthony Fabiano helped with ironing out the production by contributing their respected parts on the already prearranged songs.Lenny and Anto always worked good together! All the songs were recorded live off the floor with Serg taking lead on positioning a handful of dynamic and condenser mics around the ambient 12ft * 25ft studio room, NOTE: not including the bar. Pete, well known of his guitar sound with his Tele and Marshall Stack closely added melody to his bro's emphasized rhythm guitar work noticing all the voicing’s needed around the unwrapped chords. All songs were monopolized around the song writing style of S.Palumbo’s ardent voice and in your face Les Paul/Marshall Stack. Not to mention a few good cases of cold beer and a few thought out misunderstandings!
Only spirit vocals were addressed during the initial bed track basement recordings. Serg would mimic the unfinished lyrics to the verses, choruses and bridges with falsetto and his best interpretation of Mick Jagger lip synching to aid the posse through the arrangements. Many laughs around this approach! But it worked! He adds a special Thank You to Mick! Middle of Nowhere was well rehearsed; some of the songs on Distant Kiss were performed live under the A.K.A. Bud Shamble in the late nineties before making it onto the Middle of Nowhere’s, Distant Kiss. Once the bed tracks were completed Serg worked with the data files and .WAV files at his home studio dubbed Anything Audio Studios. All vocals were multitracked and mixed with the music and this method took about six months. After that amount of time he sometimes would forget where he recorded the tracks and had to re-acquaint himself with the home mixes. All in All the development was a good day’s work.
Anything Audio Productions in Sault Ste Marie is the parent company to Anything Audio Studios and is home to JustAnotherHook Publishing. The publishing; solicits Middle of Nowhere music, Bud Shamble music and is open to other musicians.
