Bruce Beacom

Bruce Beacom

Bruce Beacom is an American singer/songwriter and record producer who was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1970 and grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC. He had an affinity for music at an early age and sang and played in bands throughout high school. He moved to Los Angeles, CA, in 1990 for college where he received his Bachelors Degree as a painter from California Institute of The Arts in 1994. After graduating from CALARTS Bruce returned to the east coast in 1995 to live in New York City, where he stayed thru 2000. During his 5+ years in NYC, Bruce avidly pursued his music career by playing the club circuit as a solo artist in the Village and the Lower East Side. Bruce produced his first record titled "Bebo live in NYC" in 1999-2000. It was a solo acoustic live album recorded over the course of 5 different performances in 1999 at clubs such as The Mercury Lounge, The Living Room, CBGB's Gallery 313, The Fort at The Sidewalk and Baby Jupiter. Bruce moved to Los Angeles in 2000 and continued performing on the club circuit across Southern California. He began working on his 2nd record in late 2002; however, in 2003, he started to lose his hearing rapidly due to a genetic hearing disease called "otosclerosis". Eventually the disease made Bruce lose 98% of his hearing and he never new if he would hear or play music ever again. Over the course of the next four years (2004-2008), Bruce underwent 4 separate ear surgeries at The House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles, which managed to restore 60% of Bruce’s hearing. Bruce now has prosthetic (titanium) bones in both of his ears and wears hearing aids but is beyond thankful he can still hear. He finally finished his 2nd record, "Platinum Pennies" in 2009. “Platinum Pennies” is his first studio effort and is a true testament to Bruce's long and arduous fight for his hearing. Bruce's musical style is a culmination of the influences he was exposed to growing up in the Washington DC area, which all still influence his music today. One can hear rock, blues, punk, funk and jazz either juxtaposed at one minute or seamlessly wrapped around one another the next. Bruce's delivery is a humble yet passionate style. His vibe is upbeat and keeps any listener on their toes via smooth stylistic shifts, dynamic song writing and introspective lyrics. On "Platinum Pennies", Bruce weaves grooves, harmonies and melodies into songs that get inside your head and stay there. Download the record now and enjoy a fresh, original sound which Bruce notably refers to as "Acoustic Funk". Bruce is currently working on his 3rd (highly anticipated) record with Bass player Kevin Boyd, Drummer Pete Relyea and Engineer/Co-Producer Robert Hoehn at "East Venice Studios" in Venice Beach, California. They also play live concerts regularly in Los Angeles and across Southern California.

During the early stages of it's recording, in 2003, I was diagnosed with a genetic hearing disorder known as otosclerosis. Over the next few years I underwent 4 ear surgeries on separate occasions to try to save my hearing. On each occasion, the production of “Platinum Pennies” was put on hold. There were serious questions about my hearing loss being recovered and if so, at what percentage? There were many times when it appeared as if I would never hear again and that was truly terrifying. As you can imagine, it looked like this record may never be finished. So I prayed, went under the blade, continued to write, continued to play, then yet again, went under the blade (3 more times) and to this very day, I pray! I’ve got prosthetic bones in both of my ears and I have to wear hearing aids, but I can still hear because of it and I am forever thankful. This record, now finally being released, symbolizes much more than I could have ever imagined… a test of love, surrender, devotion, patience and faith. I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in helping "Platinum Pennies" come to fruition. What a pleasure and honor it was working with all of you. I would like to thank my beautiful wife, Holly, for her undying love and support through all the ups and downs during its process. You are an Angel and I couldn’t have done it without you! I would like to thank Dr. Sol Marghzar of “The Hearing Doctor” in Culver City, CA for identifying my otosclerosis and giving me hope! I would like to thank Dr. William H. Slattery III of the “House Ear Clinic” in Los Angeles, CA for his skillful precision when performing all 4 surgeries, thus returning a considerable amount of my hearing! Most importantly, I want to thank GOD for giving me the strength to persevere and not become a victim of the circumstances that had befallen me, otherwise, you would not be listening to this record and I most likely would be completely deaf. I now clearly understand that when a challenging event occurs in our lives, it is not the event that defines us, but rather, how we choose to handle it. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy my collection of 13 pennies that I spent time shining. -Bruce Beacom 04/21/09 Additional thanks goes to Sarah Beacom, Eric & Csilla Beacom, Emma & Stuart Frank, Connie & Rusty Russell, and Phil Reiser. Thank you for your wisdom and support. This record is dedicated in the loving memory of my father, Lt. Col Edward Joseph Beacom USAF (Sept 26, 1922 - Sept 21, 1997)
