Liner Notes: General Smiley began his career in the late 70s at Studio One under the direction of the late Sir Coxsone Dodd. The Duo Papa Michigan and General Smiley recorded their first number 1 hit Rub A Dub Style , followed by the equally popular Nice Up The Dance.
The duo then recorded at Tuff Gong Studio the classic One Love Jamdown, produced by Jahmet Enwright, which was released as a double a-side with Freddie McGregors Jogging. Michigan And Smiley gave a dynamic performance at the annual Reggae Sunsplash Festival in 1981, which led to a debut appearance in the UK where they topped the bill at the Black Echoes Reggae Awards Show.
In 1982 Henry Junjo Lawes productions dominated the dancehall introducing current DJs to a wider audience without attenuating the sound. Michigan And Smiley recorded a grim warning to prospective philanderers, Diseases, and the song inspired Yellowman to record an identical version alongside his sparring partner, Fathead.
Throughout the 80s Michigan And Smiley sustained attention in the album charts with the releases Step By Step, Sugar Daddy, Back In The Biz and Reality Must Rule Again. The duo enjoyed a revival in the 90s when some of their earlier hits resurfaced through VP in the USA. Presently Michigan and Smiley still get Together for performances though they both are involve in their respective Projects within the realms of the art.
General Smiley has since completed his first solo CD entitled "O.G.S" [ Original General Smiley ] recorded at the Kingston Studio, produced by upfulone Records outside of New Jersey alongside his own production company RuffCompany Records.

Liner Notes: Michigan and Smiley were a Jamaican singing combo of the late seventies first wave of Dancehall music, which included Yellowman, Eek a Mouse, Lone Ranger, General Echo, and others. They first recorded at Clement Coxsone Dodd's famous Studio 1, pressing their first number one hit, "Rub a Dub Style", which featured their innovative call and response style vocals overdubbed on the classic Studio 1 rhythm, "Vanity". Their next single, perhaps a larger hit, "Nice Up the Dance" was a version of the quintessential Studio 1 rhythm, "Real Rock". These singles, with four other tracks, also versions of classic Studio 1 rhythms, were released as their first LP, "Nice Up the Dance". The names of these two singles were quickly incorporated into the lexicon of dancehall phrasology. Their call and response style was likewise influential on the future developments of the music, blending together straightforward singing styles and toasting. By 1982, they caught the attention of seminal dancehall producer, Henry "Junjo" Lawes, who recorded their biggest hit, "Diseases" over the then immensely popular "Mad Mad" rhythm. This track was featured on their second, and perhaps best LP, "Downpression". They went on to cut an album for Channel One Records, "Step by Step". The last of their hit records was "Sugar Daddy", pressed on RAS Records, which featured yet another reworking of "Mad Mad". The duo continued to record and make appearances at festivals

RuffCompany Records
was started by Mr Errol ( General Smiley ) Bennett and his brotherMr Herman ( Ranking Bird ) Bennett in 1996 with the aim to give the youth in and around the Kingston thirteen community who are intrested in the art of music paticularly DJs and singers a chance to break into the industry.
We innitially acruired rythm tracks from some of the best like Sly and Robbie, we had some nice projects going on but then we had a fire and lost most of the original tapes. In two thousand we moved back to California with the intention to continue working towards rebuilding what we had lost, so we registered the company in California and decided to put together a digital recording studio.
Now that we've accomplished that dream and been recording for some indi label out of England and the U.S we are now ready to producce rhythm tracks basically to start working on a compilation project with General Smiley, his son Brandon ( B.B. ) Bennett and some close friends.
