Liner Notes: Success has a thousand fathers, failure is perpetually an orphan. Although I conceived of most of these as covers of standards, so far even the publishers themselves claim they are too distorted and insult the artists. However, if by chance these things make any money at all, I will still be glad to share. For the moment however, royalty sharing would be nothing more than sharing in the expenses. Technically they become my original work. I checked with a local shyster and indeed, it is true. See if you can recognize any of them. In the tradition of the Cheap and Ugly series, these are as cheap as they get. As for ugly, they're truthful, so I guess I am at the mercy of your judgement. I will always do my best. I sincerely hope they bring you even half the joy they have brought to me and those close to me.

  • JUSTIN SCANLON - the Simple Things
Liner Notes: The simple things in life. The pleasure of a glorious defining moment when you realize you feel a deep love that is returned. An experience so rare and profound that one sees one’s lifetime planned in the eye of the mind. And then there are the more frequent simple things that we provide ourselves so that whatever the cause of our death, it will not be boredom. Pride so we may ignore our weaknesses and feel mighty. Lust, so we may reproduce and immortalize our character flaws in the echoes of our progeny. Envy, lest we ever feel gratitude for our own gift of life in human form. Indolence, lest we develop the dangerous pursuit of knowledge for its own sake. Ravening greed lest the machines that replicate bright and shiny gee-gaws fall short of their production quotas. And certainly in the land where food is called fast, and fasting is pathological, may gluttony maintain its buffoon presence. And now let the diamond of anger shine in preceding six fold setting, because it alone of all these interesting simple things, feels no shame. Therefore, let it continue most rightly to rule them all. Being more of a broke poet and retail veteran than skilled studio musician, I need to give special thanks to Dominic Barone. He has volunteered countless hours of his time wearing many hats: engineer, producer, master musician and musical composer who performs bass, guitar and drums on many of the tracks. Rest assured the ones that are not so good are the ones I played on. See, I ran out of money before Dominic was able to apply his virtuosity and articulated musical vision to this writer’s “scratch tracks.” I can only hope that the music/poetical work as it stands will not disappoint you. Finally I have beg forgiveness of the superb photographer, Danny Mollohan, for doing a bit of a butcher job on one of his works of art in order to generate the album cover. He is great. Do not forget his name. Look for his work. You will be glad of the experience when you find it.

  • JUSTIN SCANLON - The High Cost Of Poverty
Liner Notes: Et In Arcadia Ego. Into every garden comes the self. And the self brings death. But without that fall from innocence, without that opening of the eyes upon the sense of monstrousness, where would we be? Is it not likely that the happy garden state was one which were we to take one look at and experience one second of, we would feel pitched into a hell the self worked so hard to escape? A biologically “successful” entity living in a state of constant projection, unable to distinguish hallucination from actuality. A self consuming artifact builds a self reflexive ethos to explain the self to the self using self imposed distortions of its already distorting senses? It creates its own snake pit of dissatisfactions by hyperbolizing the most trivial of experiences into idols with ever more tottering magnitude. So what the heck? May as well play some solo nylon. Without Dominic Barone acting as combination whipmaster and producer (yeah, like we really needed both of those words to complete the meaning), I would have erased everything. I hope the tracks bring you even half the joy that music inspires in my heart. The joys are everyone’s. The flaws are mine and mine alone.

  • JUSTIN SCANLON - Jazzical
Liner Notes: Jazzical. Well, that’s how Vince at Guitar Center describes this material. It’s as good a term as any I can think of. I’m not really a classical guitarist, but a lot of folks have done me the honor of referring to my work in that manner. However, I fear that does an injustice to the elite of the classical guitar world, who have devoted so much more in time and talent to their vocation, and who have reaped so much to my benefit. And in a way it does an injustice to my background, which is much more indebted to both jazz and delta blues. But Bluclassjazzdelical sounds like the march of a batallion breaking step while crossing a bridge, so Jazzical it will be. Thanks Vincent. And thanks again, Guitar Center. The classically inclined among you will recognize some of the chestnuts embedded herein.

Liner Notes: Sooner or later I had to make the long suggested blues album. If you are a perfectionist, borrow the album, don’t buy it. If you are a traditionalist, it’s probably worth it, despite some of the tracks seeming more like jazz. The album is about the various metamorphoses blues takes, although it is anything but exhaustive. Like the sonnet in English, French and Italian poetry, many great talents have left their fingerprints on this form. I, midget riding their shoulders, have hopped down to get my hands on it, as well. I hope it brings you pleasure. Thanks. Justin Niall Scanlon

  • JUSTIN SCANLON - Hey, Speaking Of The Unspeakable!
Liner Notes: Speaking of the unspeakable, is speak of the things we all already know, but normally purge from our thoughts. Young people in the flower of their adulthood, and bursting with whatever talent or lack of it they may have, are dying in wars that can only sap the strength of the victors and morally qualify the propagandized vanity of the losers. Nobody knows why they keep dying in the twenty first century, and we with the luxury to be able to think about it are saying nothing of substance. What does it mean about our assumptions? If we assume there is no soul inherent to these jewels in creation’s tiaras, then we safely watch their suffering on the TV like Greek Gods of old, to divert us from our boredom. However, what does it mean to each of us if we assume that they, presumably like us, have souls? And what does it mean of they look at us and see us as soulless? So Speaking of the unspeakable, where did the truth go?

Liner Notes: What kind of idiocy would generate an album full of iambic tetrameters from a somewhat obscure 17th Century poet, spy, and member of parliament who went on record as beating the crap out of one of his fellow Parliamentary thugs on the Parliament floor? I and a Rapping crew from the Caribbean. (I wish we saw a little of that initiative and vitality today in the big DC.) That’s who. The meter is perfect Rap. And wait until we release our Xmas album. Liner Notes: THESE ARE BASICALLY REAL BOOK CHARTS. I'VE TWISTED THEM AROUND ALMOST BEYOND RECOGNITION TO GREAT EXTENT. I HAVE USE THESE TO ANSWER STUDENT QUESTIONS REGARDING HORIZONTAL VERSUS VERTICAL APPROACHES TO SUBSTITUTIONS. THEY ARE NOT "HOT" OR HEAVILY "MASTERED" TRACKS, BUT THEY ARE MORE THAN SUFFICIENT TO MAKE THE MUSICAL POINTS, AND ARE WELL WITHIN COMMERCIAL STANDARDS. PROSPERITY WOULD MAKE RE-MIXING POSSIBLE, BUT THEN WHERE WOULD I FIND THE TIME TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD? THERE WILL BE A BUNCH OF THESE KIND OF RECORDINGS. i LOVE THEM AND HOPE BY SHARING THEM YOU WILL EXPERIENCE PLEASURE AND INSPIRATION. I MAKE NO APOLOGIES TO AUDIOPHILES. THE REAL ONES WILL UNDERSTAND THE EXIGENCIES OF MY POSITION, AND THE BREVITY OF MY REMAINING TIME. IT'S NOT THAT I'M DYING TOMORROW OR ANYTHING SO REOMANTIC, IT IS SIMPLY I HAVE A LOT OF THIS TO GO, AND AM STILL SCRATCHING THE SURFACE.

  • JUSTIN SCANLON - The Crucifixion Of Louie Armstrong
Liner Notes: The Crucifixion of Louie Armstrong. All right. Before every religious and non-religious person that comes across this title takes offense for all the wrong reasons, let me explain. This is the penultimate chapter of my unpublished (of course) novel about time travel and damnation, entitled The Crucifixion of Louie Armstrong. The anti-hero cuts a deal with an anti-satan to win the lottery and save the life of his slutty girlfriend. As one should expect, the technology does not quite realize the "ideal" scenario. I have always been impressed by the depth of faith expressed by the so-called “black” ministries. As a “white” I thought it might be a good exercise of my own faith to visualize Christ as a “black” man. Louie Armstrong built like a nose tackle appeared in a dream. So, Louie Armstrong it is. And now you can take offense for the right reasons. And, oh please buy this recording when and where you can, so I can afford to be buried and have a cool party. For most of my very sweet, but all that short life(wow, have I been lucky!) that possibility has not really been around.

  • JUSTIN SCANLON - Fabulous! Simply Fabulous
Liner Notes: "Fabulous! Simply Fabulous!" That's what my producer, William "Buddy" Bolotron has to say. He may slightly biased because he pays the bills. See these tracks are completely unedited solo tracks. About the only thing enhanced about the signal is a little reverb, so you don't hear the sound of the closet I did it in. He tells me that the "fabulosity is radically enhanced" because he didn't spent the money to even edit out my sometimes gasping at the end. He says it "energizes the digital vacuum with humanity." I love Buddy. Without his support none of this could have happened. But I've never seen him with a nickel that he didn't spend four times before letting go of it. He expresses it to me as "a Poundian expression of the body's alchemy synthetically representing an act of composition so immediate as to more deeply penetrate the mystery that is creation." It's all Greek to me, but I do want you to know that whatever my failings in the occasional moment, I beg your imaginations to apprehend the beauty for your highest enjoyment. I love you. And thanks, again. Without you, I am worse than nothing.

Liner Notes: Like Volume One, this is unedited material. In some sort of way Buddy's right about this approach. It is more than merely honest, it is ruthless. And I like that. I'm pricing it accordingly. Economical to make, economical to buy. I want to give special credit to Shelley Robin Spivack, Esq, for generously allowing us to distort and vitiate her brilliant photograph, Bridge of the Women. You can find more of her genious if you visit: http://www.justinscanlon.com/Shelley_Spivack/ Paste it into your browser. You'll see for yourself. And finally, thank you so much for your sustaining support. As you know, all of this has been a collaborative ongoing labor of love. The truth is in the mail, so what more do you need to know, Padre? It's forgiveness time. Done jamming cheap, and priced accordingly.
