  • McCool - Original Cast Recording
Liner Notes: Paul Boyd’s musical "McCool" was first produced in 2002 by Northern Ireland's oldest independent theatre producer Big Telly Theatre Company in association with the Lyric Theatre, Belfast. The musical, based on the story of Irish mythological wild-child Finn McCool, toured Ireland extensively and developed a cult following across the country. In 2006 "McCool" was selected by Mercury Musical Developments in London as a UK entry to the NAMT’s Festival of New Musicals in New York. This recording of the full show was made in 2002 and is performed by the original cast, including West End star Rachel Tucker (BBC TV's "I'd Do Anything", "We Will Rock You", "Wicked"). "McCool" is an exciting multi-media rock concert performed by a multi-roleplaying cast of five, which charts the life of Finn McCool from his lowly beginning as an abandoned baby to his eventual position as Ireland's first superstar. The show features an eclectic, non-stop mix of dance and pop music, culminating in a spectacular megamix finale. "This belter of a musical is a high tech hit ... high energy, high octane ... a really McCool show ... a giant step" (Belfast Telegraph) "Be blown away by Finn McCool ... Boyd has evidently sussed out the structure of West End musical hits" (Belfast News Letter) "A magical piece of rock theatre ... this show is worth catching" (Irish News) For more information on "McCool" and other musicals by Paul Boyd, visit the pbm web site at www.pbmusicals.com "McCool" original book, music, and lyrics by Paul Boyd © pbm 2002 This recording © pbm 2002 "McCool" 2002 Irish Tour/World Premiere production . illusions designed by Paul McEneaney . illusions built by Paul Gomac . costumes designed by Eilish Hogg . lights designed by Mike Borgia . film directed by Mark Hill . sound designed by Patrick Dalgety . sound operated by Mick Draine . technical manager Guy Barriscale . stage managed by Tracy Haddock . choreographed by Sarah Johnston . musical director - Paul Boyd . directed by Zoe Seaton . performed by Brenda Brooks . • The Haunting of Helena Blunden - Original Cast Recording (Selected Songs)
Liner Notes: Big Telly Theatre Company presented the new musical "The Haunting of Helena Blunden" by award-winning writer and composer Paul Boyd and novelist and playwright Bernie McGill on tour across Ireland in February and March 2010, directed for the stage by Zoë Seaton. A derelict Belfast linen mill forms the backdrop for Paul Boyd and Bernie McGill’s chilling story: 80-year-old Maggie and 20-something Susan find themselves trapped in a twisted family saga where myth and reality seem confused, where past and present seem to co-exist. This recording of four songs from the show, made prior its world premiere initially for publicity purposes, features performances by original cast members Helena Bereen, Charlotte McCurry, Roisin Gallagher, and Karl O'Neill. "01. The Overture" is performed by Charlotte McCurry in the role of Susan. This number underwent rewrites prior to the show's premiere, and the lyrics featured in this recording were altered for live performance. In the stage production this number is shorter. "02. Invisible" is performed by Charlotte McCurry in the role of Susan. After the premiere production closed it was announced that this song had been shortlisted for the Stiles & Drewe Prize for Best Song From A New Musical. "03. Cut Above The Rest" is performed by Charlotte McCurry in the role of Susan, with Karl O'Neill in the role of Michael, and Helena Bereen in the role of Maggie. After the premiere production closed it was announced that this song had been named as a finalist for the Stiles & Drewe Prize for Best Song From A New Musical. The number was performed live at the Queen's Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, in London's West End in June 2010. "04. It's Over Now" is performed by Karl O'Neill in the role of Michael, Charlotte McCurry in the role of Susan, and Roisin Gallagher in the role of Helena. In the stage production, the final few bars of this number have been altered and the song segues into the underscoring of the next intense scene. The ending recorded here was the original ending to the song. "05. Orchestral Medley" features many of the main themes from the songs of 'The Haunting of Helena Blunden' and is performed here by the production orchestra featuring composer Paul Boyd on piano. Liner Notes: "Red - The Red Riding Hood Musical", Paul Boyd's musical version of the world's oldest story - Little Red Riding Hood - was commissioned and originally produced by An Grianán Theatre in Co. Donegal in 2000. The show tells the story of a troupe of travelling gypsies who camp by the edge of a dark wood and gather to tell stories around a camp fire. The sound of wolves howling from deep within the forest leads the characters to tell the story of one of their ancestors - a mysterious girl who wore a red hood. This 2001 recording has been reissued to celebrate the show's 10th Anniversary. It was recorded just after the premiere stage production closed and before the high profile 2001 revival production opened at Belfast's Lyric Theatre, and is performed here by the original vocal cast - three of the original cast members (who would also go on to appear in the 2001 revival production) Brenda Brooks, Mary McNally, and Karl O'Neill, are joined by pbm vocal performers Kennedy Boyd and John Davis. The stage production is performed by a cast of five, and has been seen in professional productions across Ireland and the UK. This Anniversary Edition of the recording includes an exclusive bonus track - the karaoke version of one of the show's most popular numbers, "I'm Your Man". "a zany new production featuring drama and movement" (Irish Times) "this show is a howling success" (Irish News) "the music is stunning" (BBC Radio) "tunes as potentially popular as any of Lloyd-Webber’s ... here’s all the broad sweep of the West End!" • Sinbad (Spectacular Water Theatre) Original Soundtrack Recording
Liner Notes: "Sinbad" is Big Telly Theatre Company’s follow-up to its internationally acclaimed production of Paul Boyd and Zoë Seaton’s water spectacular "The Little Mermaid". "Sinbad" was written by Boyd and Seaton in 2006 whilst "The Little Mermaid" was still touring across the world, and the new show premiered in May 2008 on a four-venue tour of the UK. Based on the Sinbad stories in "The Arabian Nights", Boyd and Seaton’s "Sinbad" tells the story of a seafarer whose waterside wedding is ruined when his bride-to-be is snatched by a terrifying giant bird. On his long journey to rescue her, Sinbad encounters sea creatures and aquatic monsters, has his boat stolen by a band of pirates, and comes face to face with the Old Man of the Sea. Whilst playing to sell-out crowds in Leicester in the UK the show was reviewed by the Leicester Mercury newspaper: "With the sixth Spark Festival for Children under way and rich in stories from near and far, a question sprang to mind for a certain show at Cossington Street swimming baths. Could the Big Telly Theatre Company follow the success of last year’s The Little Mermaid with its second water theatre production, Sinbad? Answer: a resounding swash buckling yes! With the stage transformed into a dangerous ocean, this action-packed spectacle follows sea-faring Sinbad’s struggle for survival to find his lost ship and bride-to-be. His encounters with poisonous sea serpents, hairy monsters, bizarre star fish and surreal birds create an unforgettable experience for children in this new concept of theatre. Specially commissioned music, atmospheric lighting and superb magical effects captivated the whole audience in this wonderful visual show. With special water-adapted costumes and masks, the eight-strong cast proved to be excellent swimmers, dancers and actors, portraying a colourful story to make Sinbad one of the highlights of the Spark Festival." (Leicester Mercury - transcribed in full) Featuring stunning costumes, amazing feats of athleticism, state-of-the-art lighting and multi-media effects, and the exciting original score immortalised on this album, "Sinbad" has quickly lived up to its promise of being specular water theatre. Liner Notes: Paul Boyd's musical of "Pinocchio" has become one of his most successful works, with many professional productions of the show staged since its premiere in 2003. The first production of the show was named 'Best Musical 2003' by Northern Ireland's national Sunday newspaper The Sunday Life. This CD recording is performed by the cast of the 2006 - 2007 Lyric Theatre Belfast production. This production was directed by Paul Boyd, and was nominated for 'The TMA Equity Theatre Award for Best Show for Children and Young People 2007', meaning that it was one of the top three productions staged nationally for children and young people that year. Based on the world-famous story by Carlo Collodi, "Pinocchio" tells the tale of the little wooden boy who wishes he were real. In one of Paul Boyd's funniest scripts well-known characters are given a special twist and a memorable story is told with charm, wit and sophistication. "a sophisticated musical whose production standards are of the highest quality ... hilarious scenes, moments of pure enchantment ... a show that demands to run and run" (Irish Times) "Paul Boyd’s Pinocchio is quite simply the best thing he has done - and on the basis of past history, that’s saying something ... a deservedly massive hit ... as strong as any big West End show" (Sunday Life) "Best Musical 2003 - a slick musical adaptation for all ages and all seasons" (Sunday Life Drama Review) "Pinocchio" original book, music & lyrics by Paul Boyd © pbm 2003 / 2006 This recording © pbm 2006 2006 production, Lyric Theatre Belfast . designed by Stuart Marshall . lights designed by Conleth White . puppet and mask effects by Frank Quinn . production manager Marianne Crossley . stage manager - Pauline McKay . deputy stage manager - Joseph Denby . assistant stage manager - Cara McGimpsey . technical stage manager - Mick Draine . sound operator - Mark Dornan . production assistant - Dominic Donnelly . set constructed by Jim Carson . costumes designed by Pat Musgrave . choreographed by Sarah Johnston . directed by Paul Boyd . performed by Tommy Wallace .
