Liner Notes: Steve Kaufman - Mystique with Bobby Hicks: Fiddle, Rusty Holloway: Upright Bass, Gary Davis: 5 String Banjo, Emory Lester: Mandolin, Casey Henry: 5 String Banjo, J.P. Cormier: Guitar, Mark Cosgrove: Guitar, Steve Kaufman: Guitar, Mandolin, 6-String Banjo, Electric Bass. CL A S S I C A L GA S with Rusty– The first instrumental I ever learned to play on the guitar. I thought (at 13) if I could do this, I can do anything. I still play it nearly everyday. TE M P T A T I O N RA G with Rusty – I learned this tune from an old piano roll. You can hear the piano’s crescendo a little past halfway through the piece. Lots of fun for me to play and hear and I hope you like it. DE N V E R BE L L E with Rusty & Bobby –I don’t know where this tune came from but I would love to meet the inspiration. TO M & JE R R Y with Rusty – I learned this tune after talking to Dan Crary about a tune he thought would make a great contest tune for the Nationals, thinking he was going to be a judge in 1986. He didn’t judge but I learned it anyway and won. Thanks Dan! LI M E HO U S E BL U E S with Emory & Rusty – Emory is one of the greatest Mandolinist of our time. This cut was recorded at the 2006 Kamp Concerts as usual with no rehearsal. He played perfectly and I thought I would let you hear my mistakes….. s i g h … … MA I D E N’S PR A Y E R with Bobby & Rusty – One of the prettiest tunes with a nice little twist. Nobody plays it on fiddle better than Bobby Hicks. WA S H I N G T O N LE E SW I N G with Gary & Rusty – This is a great tune both melodically and structurally.Lots of fun to play especially with this company of talent. MY S T I Q U E O F SC R I A B I N – This tune is based on Alexander Scriabin’s Mystic Chord. My favorite Uncle Bill was an incredible musician. He played for himself rarely letting us hear what he was working on but for as long as I can remember he tested us on knowing the notes of the “Mystic Chord.” I never did anything with the chord except play it once on piano. In November of 2006 my Uncle passed away of natural causes leaving me with a quest for the Mystic Chord. His argument was that it was a chord that didn’t resolve because it didn’t have to. I took it to the studio and the first day came up with the chord progression with the left hand notes of the chord played on the left speaker and the high right hand notes of the chord played on the right speaker. The next day I played many different melodies but always came back to what you hear today. Dedicated to my Uncle Bill, I give you The Mystique of Scriabin. I ’M BE G I N N I N G TO SE E TH E LI G H T with Bobby & Rusty – Thanks to my Mother, I’ve heard this tune all my life. I just never played it until I got into the studio for this project. Great tune with great chord c h a n g e s. NE W FI V E CE N T S with Rusty – I learned this tune from my friend David Grier, one of the most gifted guitarists on the planet. Thanks David ! KI N F O L K S I N CA R O L I N A with Bobby & Rusty – A song from the great Merle Travis to Doc Watson to me and then to you. Hope you like it. FE S T I V A L WA L T Z with Bobby & Rusty – One of the most beautiful waltzes I know. With Bobby and Rusty playing with me how can you not love it. KA T I E HI L L with Bobby, Gary & Rusty – This was so fast I had to warm up in the studio for three hours before attempting to record it. Bobby comes in and says “Is that all you got”? Man, this one was a k i l l e r . BL A C K MO U N T A I N RA G with Mark –A fitting way to end this CD. This is the first flatpicking tune I ever learned to play on the guitar. Not many pickers out there can play it better than Flatpicking Champ Mark Cosgrove. So there you have Mystique. Beginning with the first fingerpicking tune I ever learned and ending with the first flatpicking tune I ever learned. You also have many of the musical ideas in between then and now. I hope you like this recording and you will vote for it when the Grammies contact you for recommendations. Also if you know of any big time record companies and fast talking agents that might want to get in touch with me, just have them call me on the Flatpicking Hotline, toll free of course. I look forward to the day I can give up my morning paper route and making biscuits over at Hardee’s. Nothing wrong with those jobs but those Sunday papers are killing my Pontiacs rear suspension. Liner Notes: When I first moved to the Knoxville, TN area I was about 19 years old and ready to take on the world. I was asked at some point to play on the Cas Walker Home and Farm Hour TV show. This is where I first met mandolin great - Red Rector. We hit it off great. He and his wife "Parker" invited me over for dinner and the long lasting friendship was born. Soon after I met Red I invited him to record with me. The project came out originally on vinyl and quickly went out of print. Red Rector passed away in 1990. He was a National Treasure. So not wanting to see this great mandolinist's work lay, I stripped off all the other instruments from the recordings. What you hear, due to modern recording technology, are Red's original tracks and my new ones. Here are Dan Crary's original liner notes from the original album: One night in the summer of 1977 I had a chance to sit down and join with some fine guitar players in Knoxville, Tennessee. One of the things I remember about that gathering is the looks of respect and awe several of the pickers gave Steve Kaufman when he came over and sat down. I soon found out why: Steve is one of the best young flatpickers in the country. And along with his flair for the hot and flashy, he has some additional ammunition like power, clarity and musical taste. All those things make him an out-of-the-ordinary guitar man from the ranks of the thousands of people interested in flatpicking these days. So when I got a tape of the album I was excited to hear it, and I wasn't disappointed. The music is upbeat hot and melodic. When it is over you feel like you've heard the tune and you've learned a couple of things about guitar and mandolin playing and you've enjoyed yourself besides. Steve and Red Rector are a great combination, and the whole effect of this session is very impressive, and a lot of fun. (Now why didn't I think of doing that on Beaumont Rag?) Liner Notes: Back Home – Hot as a firecracker, smooth as silk, tasty as Mom’s apple pie. Steve Kaufman- Three-Time National Guitar Champ Guitar, Mandolin, Shaker Egg and Bass. Steve recorded on his custom 810 Taylor and his 1915 A-4 Gibson Mandolin “Several years ago, before the invention of CDs, guitar instructional videos and the like, I ordered an album from a Tennessee guitarist names Steve Kaufman. I had heard great things about Steve’s music from other Flatpickers, but they hadn’t prepared me for what I was about to experience. The music literally JUMPED out of the speakers as Steve and his friend Red Rector burned through an albums worth of music. That recording, more than any other, inspired me to try to be a better guitar player. Thanks Steve for the inspiration and for the opportunity to record this project with you.” Robert Shafer Steve Kaufman was born into a musical family in 1957. His father was a jazz piano player and his mother was a classically trained pianist. Music was always around. At four Steve started plinking at the piano and did so for several years. He then moved on to the electric guitar at 10 for a few years and put it away. Next came the cello in 5th grade for a few years. After this Steve picked up the acoustic guitar again and blazed right through a "Folk Guitar" method book. When finished he thought if this is as hard as it gets it's not for him. Then his younger brother, Will, started playing the banjo and his instructor told him he needed a rhythm guitar player to help with his timing. So Steve then picked up his guitar again and got into the bluegrass rhythm. One day Will brought home a Flatt and Scruggs LP, which featured Doc Watson on guitar, and Steve was hooked on flatpicking. Steve practiced hard with his newfound love of music, sometimes up to 8 hours a day. At age 18 he entered the National Flatpicking Championships in Winfield, KS and made the top 10. The following year was a wash. In 1977, Steve took 2nd place to Mark O'Connor and in 1978, at 21 years old, he returned to win the championship. Then after being barred for 5 years he returned on the 6th year to win the 1984 championships again. Winfield bars the winner for 5 years and they can come back on the 6th year but in 1986 they decided to open up the contest to everyone and not bar the past years champs. Steve returned to win his goal. He became the winner and the first and, at this writing, the only Three Time Winner of the National Flatpicking Championships. He is also noted to have 3 consecutive wins in the Nationals because he was barred all the years he did not enter. Steve continues to work hard in the world of music. He began producing books and videos in 1989 after teaching private lessons for close to 20 years. His catalog of instructional materials is close to 100 items. His listening CDs and Videos number over 17. Steve began touring the world conducting seminars, workshops, clinics and concerts in 1990 and after 5 years he and his wife, Donna, began "Steve Kaufman's Flatpicking Camp." Every other year they have added more camps into their agenda and now under the title "Steve Kaufman's Acoustic Kamps" they host a Fingerpicking Kamp, Old Time Banjo, Bluegrass Banjo and Mandolin Kamp as well. They have grown into the largest Kamps of their kind in the world with students traveling from around the world to Maryville, Tennessee. In 2002 and 2004, Steve Kaufman received the Gold Award from a reader's poll in Acoustic Guitar Magazine for running the "Best Workshops, Seminars and Camps." Since 1990 Steve has developed the reputation of being the "World's Guitar Instructor." Steve stays busy being a husband and father, running his Kamps, tour schedule, writing books and recording videos and CDs as well as owning and operating The Palace Theater in downtown Maryville - the area's premier acoustic venue as well as an espresso bar. Also connected to the Palace Theater is a café and deli called the Palace Café and Catering. Robert Shafer Robert recorded with his Henderson guitar and Blue Taylor guitar. “Robert is one of the tastiest guitarists on the scene today. He is a Two-Time National Guitar Champ and we can only guess when number three will come around. He was a joy to play with on this session and always an inspiration to listen to.” Steve Kaufman Robert Shafer has played guitar has played guitar professionally since graduating high school in 1981. He is a 2 time winner of the National Flatpicking Championship, held annually at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. Robert has also held state guitar championships in Kentucky (3 times), Tennessee (twice), Ohio (twice) and Alabama. Robert has appeared on the Grand Ole Opry, Mountain Stage, BBC and has worked with many well known artists including Mark O'Connor, Mike Snider, Kenny Baker, Josh Graves and many others. In addition to being a first rate flatpicker, Robert is also an amazing electric guitarist. His 1997 release, "Hillbilly Fever" on the Upstart/Rounder label received rave reviews from Guitar Player magazine, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Vintage Guitar magazine and many other prominent publications. Robert's influences range from flatpicking pioneer Doc Watson to the legendary rockabilly guitarist, Danny Gatton. Robert currently resides near Charleston, WV.
