Liner Notes: Lucas van Merwijk & the Cubop City Big Band Que Sensación! A big band tribute to the pioneers of Afro Cuban Jazz. Grupo Afro Cuba, one of bandleader and drummer Lucas van Merwijk’s primary and major inspirations in this genre, was a leading force in the 1980ies. This groups virtuoso drummer, Oscarito Valdés was the first and foremost to draw Van Merwijks attention to this great ensemble. Composer and flute player Oriente Lopez and bass player Omar Hernández were a few to contribute strongly in this bands groundbreaking repertoire of which the Cubop City Big Band recorded three compositions; ‘Que Sensación!’, ‘Ya Puede Empezar La Dicha De Los’ Dos and ‘Si Preguntan Por Mi’. The great Cuban sax player Paquito De Rivera is honored on this record in an original composition entitled ‘Pa' Quito’, written in Paquito's style by the bands pianist and arranger Marc Bischoff. ‘Para Yemaya’ is an adaptation of an arrangement by Nueva Manteca's brilliant pianist and leader, Jan Laurens Hartong. This version of a praise song to Yemayá, the Orisha of the sea, was originally recorded by Nueva Manteca for their Afro Cuban Sanctus album and has been re-arranged for the Cubop City Big Band by trombonist Ilja Reijngoud. The late Emiliano Salvador, legendary genius pianist and composer, did immense work in pushing forward the barriers of latin-jazz and Cuban piano playing. ‘A Puerto Padre’, a song dedicated to Salvador’s place of birth in Cuba and ‘Para Luego Es Tarde’ are two of the pieces that have been chosen out of his tremendous repertoire. The Cubop City Big Band, a smoking 20-piece salsa & latin jazz big band from The Netherlands. The orchestra was founded by drummer and percussionist Lucas van Merwijk in 1995 and has gained recognition throughout the world with its performances and recordings. The orchestra has an international line up with musicians from Venezuela, USA, Panama, Puerto Rico, England, Colombia, Germany and Holland and has worked with top players from the international Latin scene including Alfredo ‘Chocolate’ Armenteros, Edy Martinez, Andy Gonzalez, Armando Peraza, Karl Perazzo, Raul Rekow, Luis Conte and Nelson Gonzales.
