Liner Notes: In a career that spanned more than fifty years, Tennessee Ernie Ford became one of the most successful recording artists of the twentieth century. In his twenty-seven years as an artist with Capitol Records, he recorded some of the biggest-selling, most popular singles, and albums ever released by the label, including ‘Sixteen Tons’, recorded in September of ’55, which sold one million copies faster than any record in history, and became the biggest-selling single in Capitol’s history. It was a milestone that would soon be passed --- by Ford himself. In June of 1956, he recorded an album titled, ‘Hymns’; simple arrangements of traditional inspirational songs he’d grown up singing in choirs. Their popularity outside of churches had struck a common chord with tens of thousands of his fans, who’d come to expect his daily variety show, and his live concerts to include, and usually close with a hymn or spiritual. The label was dubious. Nine years later, ‘Hymns’ was recognized by Capitol’s president as the largest-selling album in the label’s history. It remained on the Billboard Top 100 Album Chart for 277 consecutive weeks, and in 2006, was tied with Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’, as the 10th biggest-selling record of all time. The label was no longer dubious. They began planning for Ford’s next gospel album immediately. But Ford’s success with inspirational material on vinyl was fueled by his gift for touching people with this music – not from behind a vocal booth in a studio, removed from his audience, but in the room, supper club, stadium, or concert hall with them – as these seventeen performances so clearly tell. Lovingly and painstakingly restored with digital technology, each is a testament not just to the beauty of these timeless songs, but of Ford’s equally enduring, and powerful talent as a singer and an entertainer. Liner Notes: As one of the most popular television stars of the twentieth century, Ernie Ford was literally a member of millions of American families -- and nothing made him feel closer to those millions of folks than Christmas. Over the three seasons of his first daily series for NBC, to the five record-breaking years of his prime-time favorite, The Ford Show, to his hit daily ABC series from San Francisco, and special after special, television was a medium that Ernie used to its fullest advantage to share that closeness and spirit every Holiday season. Lovingly restored and remastered from eighteen classic live performances with the Roger Wagner Chorale and the Voices of Walter Schumann, this collection is truly a timeless Christmas experience in song and story.
