Pal·imp·sest n. A manuscript, typically of papyrus or parchment, that has been written on more than once, with the earlier writing incompletely erased and often legible.

"I began scoring the base tracks for the piece ‘Palimpsest’ in early 2000. After a few months, I had about 15 of the 30 total tracks that would go into the piece. I purposely put it all aside, but for one track. From that one track, I began building ‘Grain,’ which took its own stretch of months. After ‘Grain’ was completed, I took a separate, unique element from it and folded it back into the ‘Palimpsest’ piece. That piece grew to 21 tracks, and I once again put it aside, purposely, and began work on ‘Grass.’ Of the 11 tracks of ‘Grass,’ five consist of heavily treated vocal samples. ‘Grass’ was a much faster process. When it was finished, I took one of its elements, and once again folded it into ‘Palimpsest.’ I then began the final process, the re-working of the 'Palimpsest' piece from the ground up. I used the 22 tracks that existed, plus 8 more that I created/found/manipulated, to arrive at the final version of the piece. After all this I stripped ‘Palimpsest’ back down to a few essential atmospherics, then what I had decided would be the very first sound of the very first piece that is heard on the disc - ‘Grass I’ - and built the denouement, ‘Grass II.’ Derivative, cumulative, composite and unique...something that would have made Gestalt proud."

Firstly, my thanks to Astra Kim for once again drawing me at her whim into something with such complexity and emotion as I could never have conceived. Secondly, of course, a bold "Cheers" to Dustin Alexander's sidelong neurons for said aforementioned complexity and emotion; without him, I'd have had loads more sleep since my inception to the project.
IRONY? ALWAYS.
The music. The music. Electronics. Samples. Sounds warped and waffled, coated in warm syrup, electrified by lightning until they cried like babes, then dipped in beer batter and plunged into the deep fryer. (Such is the sound of aural agony.)
It began loud...it started with the 'Lost' pieces, walls of sound that were written to collapse in on the listener's safety while our dear Ms. Oberhauser battled her viridical foes. As the story’s aura began vibrating alongside my own, I, and the music, became more insular and darkly predictive, turning quiet and staring when a blow was to strike. But this was not the blunt, obvious lull before a dizzy, torn boxer falls to a knockout; no, this soundtrack - with its samples and sounds, guitars and singing bowls and violins and haunted harmonicas and magnets clanging across my vibrantstark moonlit lake at insomniac hours - became the sonic metaphor for the look on the cat Jonesy's face in the movie "Alien" as the beast crept down from above then eviscerated Harry Dean Stanton.
So, here we are, standing here with something creeping silently around this space. While it builds a hunger the music plays, these sounds of my brains channeled via Dustin Alexander's singular madness, and writing their surreal sonic diary as they are being burned into aluminum, true as any epitaph.

Liner Notes: "Man and Moon" was recorded as a tonic for those nights when the sun was rising faster than I was falling; when I only had one hour to sleep, barely a nap, but I needed it to be as deep as possible.
"Man and Moon," a lulling, morphing series of arpeggios, uses the addition of brainwave synchronization over the length of the 60-minute installment to take the listener from a wakeful state, all the way to REM sleep - the sleep that rebuilds you for the coming day - then back out again to full wakefulness, all in 60 minutes. I know it works for me; I hope it help gives my fellow listeners some often elusive rest that they crave.
NOTE: "Man and Moon" is most effective when listened to at relatively low volume, in stereo headphones, preferably with noise reduction turned on while 37,000 feet above the ground. However, it still works quite well in the darkness of your bedroom otherwise.
