Liner Notes: A man I had never met, who spoke very little English to my even poorer Japanese, grabbed me by the arm as I walked through a crowd in Shimisu after a set. He licked his lips and wrung his hands as he wavered, almost as high as was his friend next to him. He was grimacing, and I couldn’t tell if he was angry or not. He held me by my shoulders and said “you…” a few times, as he wrestled with what he was trying to say, and I admit I started to get a little nervous as his friend moved in closer. Then, in frustration he shook his fists and said “chikara!” and wrote the huge character on the front of my shirt. We spent that night, and many others, partying in his shack above the ocean. That’s how Billy-san unknowingly named this album.
- TBM Chikara was assembled and mastered by Jack Endino -
Tracks 1-4. The LA Sleaze Session. These songs were originally released on demo-like CD called Hikikomori, and re-recorded in LA at Bell Sound Studios by Aaron Mason. On the way back from Japan, Rob and Jeff put the basic tracks to tape while Eric was stranded in San Francisco with a mysterious and unsettling inner ear imbalance.
Track 5. Part of the out-of-print, clear vinyl Rock N Roll 7” recorded & mixed by Jack Endino at Hanzek studio. Features Jeff Silva on drums.
Track 6. A lost tape. Recovered and completed for this album. Vocals recorded and track mixed by Jack Endino at Soundhouse in Seattle.
Tracks 7-10. These tracks are remastered from a compilation CD recorded by Jesse O’Donnell at Autopsy Room in Tacoma Washington.
Track 11. The Seattle Garage Session. Originally intended for a split 7” with Japanese band Sparks and Twinky and the Mothers. Recorded at the metal shop in Ballard, WA during Sparks and Twinky’s American tour with DJ Mackey Ramone. Sachiya plays guitar on this version of Sheltered.
Thanks to all the following, and probably many others: DJ Mackey Ramone, Hiroki, Kota Saito and Golden, Howling Guitar, Sachiya, Mr O., Billy-san, Tsuyoshi and the Shell Rockets, the Buzz Crew, Jack Endino, Aaron Mason, Brian Traynum, Bar 107, Jesse O’Donnell, KEXP, KXLU, Hell’s Kitchen, & everyone who came to see us live.
