Artist Case Study
Avery*Sunshine
Avery*Sunshine – an award-winning R&B and gospel singer – takes her name from fictional performers: Shug Avery in Alice Walker’s The Color Purple and Sunshine from Harlem Nights.
Both are iconic women of color who struggle to receive the necessary recognition from their peers and the industry at large.
Thirty years into Avery*Sunshine’s career, her struggle for recognition ended…

….when she won the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album.
On music’s biggest night, Avery*Sunshine’s dreams became a reality. “This is a win for all the independent soul artists,” she cheered to the applause and amens of thousands, “we been working in the dark for a minute – but the light is shining [now.]”
Here’s how TuneCore and the Accelerator platform helped Avery*Sunshine seize the spotlight she deserves.

Avery*Sunshine began releasing music with TuneCore in 2010.
Her first three releases – Avery*Sunshine, TheSunRoom, and TwentySixFour – received numerous accolades and attention.
Still, Avery*Sunshine wanted more from her musical career. Despite collaborations with Grammy-winners Michael Buble and Anthony Hamilton (and receiving a check from Grammy-winner Aretha Franklin that an ATM ate – yes, really), Avery*Sunshine’’s popular recognition felt out of sync with her professional plaudits.
Avery*Sunshine wanted more. We wanted more for her.
That’s where TuneCore Accelerator came in.

Avery*Sunshine’s first three albums are opted into TuneCore Accelerator when the platform launches in 2023.
Between June and September 2023, Avery*Sunshine’s tracks included in the program see a nearly 25% increase in streams, resulting in almost half a million more streams compared to the previous quarter.
Avery*Sunshine feels the impact instantaneously, as she notes during our TuneCore TunedIn summit in 2024:

The best, though, is yet to come.
Beginning in June 2023, Avery*Sunshine’s tracks are playlisted 45 times: tracks from her first three albums; tracks from her future-Grammy-winning album So Glad to Know You.
Prior to TuneCore Accelerator and its Artist Pitches tool, Avery*Sunshine’s tracks – celebrated and amazing as they were – are playlisted four times in twelve years.
Playlists are an essential way to reach an expanded audience: Luminate’s year-end report for 2024 confirms 202 million tracks got uploaded to DSPs and playlisted songs saw a significant boost in streaming numbers and audience reach.

That isn’t all.
As her successes multiply, Avery*Sunshine is invited to visit the offices of both Spotify and Apple Music – and her first-week streaming numbers for her soon-to-be-Grammy winning album So Glad To Know You are a new career high.
Avery*Sunshine’s subscription numbers increase on multiple platforms, which means more people see the incredible content she’s already producing, like this video series detailing the making of So Glad To Know You.
All you have to do is read the comment sections to know Avery*Sunshine is finding her people.
What does this all add up to?
Put simply: Avery*Sunshine gets on the radar of listeners that matter.
Her streaming numbers rise – that makes her a more popular artist.
She attracts more industry attention, which gets her on the radar of Grammy nominators and voters.
She receives tangible recognition from an industry where many wonderful artists go overlooked.
By the beginning of 2025, that means a Grammy win and a stirring moment on music’s biggest stage.
Her success isn’t lightning in a bottle: it’s the result of hard work – the same hard work TuneCore artists put into their career every day.
Accelerator is built to elevate musicians' hard work and help it pay massive dividends. As you can see: Avery’s success isn’t an isolated incident.

Don’t take our word for it
