As 2020 comes to a close, we’d like to take a moment to celebrate and reflect back on what made this year so impactful for TuneCore artists. We owe it to our community of talented and passionate artists to have been able to conquer all that we’ve achieved together this past year. While it’s important to move forward and set new goals, there’s so much value in taking a moment to reflect and celebrate what made 2020 so impactful for our artists. Here are some of the highlights from 2020:
2 BILLION DOLLARS
Earlier this year, TuneCore Artists hit a record setting milestone. They earned $2 billion from distributing their music all over the world. That’s billions with B. The TuneCore artist roster includes independent creatives in all stages of their careers – whether it’s musical hobbyists and new artists, working musicians and emerging artists, or top independent artists enjoying lucrative careers through their music – TuneCore has leveled the playing field for artists getting their music heard.
Since the very beginning, TuneCore has cheered on our artists who’ve worked tirelessly towards growing their independent music careers. Over the past year, we’ve shared some highlights from of our artists’ journeys on the road to success while representing what it truly means to be #IndependentAF. Independence is not just an expression of freedom, but it’s a way for our artists to stand out and be celebrated for their music career achievements– both big and small.
LIFE DURING QUARANTINE
Since March, quarantining and social distancing has felt nothing short of a major culture shock. Concerts, festivals, and live performances have unfortunately become a thing of the past (for now). As we navigate and continue to adapt to this new way of life, we’ve learned that distancing ourselves physically doesn’t mean we have to limit ourselves creatively. This, of course, includes artists’ music careers. From live streaming concerts to resources that help those who relied on live music to make a living, we provided the TuneCore community with as many educational resources as possible to support their music careers throughout the pandemic.
In response to the worldwide movement for justice and mobilization of peaceful protesting of inequality this past June, we proudly participated in the industry-wide Blackout Tuesday. On June 2, 2020, all proceeds, a total of $20k, from TuneCore’s distribution fee for new releases were donated to Color of Change, a progressive nonprofit civil rights advocacy organization in support of equal rights for the Black community. We are committed to empowering artists to continue writing, recording, and building their music careers, while acknowledging the urgent need for an end to systemic and institutional racism in all aspects of everyday life.
TuneCore is proud to recognize the leadership Black Artists have had that continues to shape and influence the music of generations across all genres. In honor of Juneteenth and Black Music Month this past year, we celebrated Black Artists with an exclusive Music Made Me Spotify playlist. Additionally, we reached out to artists within our music community to ask them about their artistry, what Juneteenth means to them, and more. We’re proud to share their voices and encourage you to read their powerful words.
Earlier this year, TuneCore jumped on the TikTok bandwagon, becoming one of their first independent distributors to partner with them. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock this past year, you’d know that TikTok has become one of the fastest-growing social media platforms across the globe. TikTok provides another way to let artists promote and showcase their music to listeners and fans. When our artists distribute to TikTok, millions of users gain access to stream their music in their videos, while we collect and pay out revenue. Even more exciting, TuneCore is thrilled to have launched our very own TikTok account, encouraging and uniting our artists who have embodied what it means to be #IndependentAF in creative ways.
When it comes to an artist’s growth, it’s up to the fans to ultimately decide just how successful an artist can be. That’s why we make it a priority to get their music heard in stores around the globe. This year, TuneCore proudly launched 10 new digital stores that we can now offer to our artists to distribute their music to, including Joox, Netease Cloud Music, TIMMUSIC, UMA, Hungama, Zed+, Resso, WYNK Music, and Triller. From South Africa to India; Italy to Mainland China; each digital store targets different international audiences, giving our artists the opportunity to reach new listeners and fans from all over the world.
INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION: INDIA, RUSSIA, BRAZIL
You asked and we listened: as our artist community continues to grow on an international level, we’ve prioritized finding the best ways to cater to each and every artists’ needs. This past summer, TuneCore officially launched its India site, featuring local talent, local currency options, and plenty of educational resources for our artists.
We kept the momentum going this past September when we proudly announced our continued international expansion with the localized launches of TuneCore Russia and TuneCore Brazil. This international growth features bigger and better localized resources supported by new local TuneCore team members, as well as dedicated local language websites in both Russian and Portuguese.
LIVE SESSION WEBINARS
In an ongoing effort to roll out bigger and better ways to educate and support our artists, we’ve expanded our educational Live Stream Webinars, while partnering with some of the biggest household names of today’s creative industry, including TikTok, Facebook Music, Instagram Music, and more. We began rolling out more localized webinars in India, the UK, and Italy to provide our international artists with relevant resources and content. We have plenty in store for more virtual events in the upcoming year, so be sure to stay tuned for some exciting announcements.
In support of continuing to empower our independent artist community, we kicked off our brand new series, TuneCore Tuesdays. Our artist community comes together for our monthly TuneCore Tuesday video, blog post, and social feature, highlighting a talented artist from our diverse pool of creators who are writing, recording, and hustling on their own terms. It’s a really inspiring way to have a view at what happens behind the scenes of an artists’ latest release.
And finally, as 2020 comes to a close, we’re thrilled to look back and celebrate the standout work of our artists. We’re so proud of every TuneCore artist who embodies what it truly means to be #IndependentAF. Keep creating, and we’ll keep helping you get heard… and paid! See you in 2021!Tags:
