DAY 1 Recap: TuneCore Austin Takeover 2016

If you were following us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook during the week of SXSW, or reading the blog leading up to it all, you already know we did it big this year.

Five events. More than forty artists. One venue.

We couldn’t be happier with how our TuneCore Austin Takeover went. Over the course of three days we were able to showcase amazing talent, throw raucous parties, connect with independent artists who use TuneCore, and partner with Swisher Sweets, WorldArts, and Mirrored Media to pack the Vulcan Gas Company on 6th Street. Not to mention, we received over 16,000 RSVPs on Do512 for our five events!

“TuneCore’s AustinTakeover was an incredible experience. It is a privilege and so much fun to spotlight the amazing up and coming talents on TuneCore like Jacob Latimore, Taylor Bennett, Miya Folick, and Trevor Wesley alongside legends like Wyclef Jean, Talib Kweli, and Waka Flaka Flame.

And the varied styles over the week represent the breadth of what a TuneCore artist is – they can rock the house like Fantastic Negrito, Towkio, and Ron Pope or be intimate performers like Ciaran Lavery, Airlands, and The Wealthy West. “

– Chris Mooney, Sr. Director of Artist Promotions & Strategic Relationships

It all started Thursday, March 17th with our TuneCore Indie Artist Forum party. As some of you know, our friends at WorldArts gave several TuneCore artists the chance to win slots during the Austin Takeover.

Trevor Wesley

Winners Flight of Ryan kicked the party off right! They were followed by Trevor Wesley, who was no stranger to TuneCore’s live events and made himself quite comfortable crooning on stage for an engaged crowd.

Lena Fayre 1

As fans filtered in an out, attendees were treated to fantastic performances from the likes of Grayshot, LazyEyes, Lena Fayre and Baby E.

Chicago MC Towkio revved up the crowd when he jumped into the crowd, juking, rapping and involving the whole room.

Blondfire, another LA-based act who has enjoyed playing TuneCore Live once before, wowed a packed room full of fans who were lucky enough to catch them early in their trip to Austin.

Checking out 6th street

The roof deck was hopping, the drinks were cold, and the Swisher Sweets were burning. The energy that filled the Vulcan set the tone for what was to come.

Check out our recaps for Day 2 and Day 2, plus more footage from Day 1 of our Austin Takeover in the gallery below!

TuneCore Austin Takeover: Indie Artist Forum Day Party 3/17

On Thursday, March 17th, we’ll be kicking off the first event of our Austin Takeover with WorldArts at the Vulcan Gas Company! We’re excited as ever to launch what should be an amazing three-day and night stretch of shows.  These events are completely free, no badge or wristband required, and of course, feature an open bar. The show goes from 12pm-6pm.

Our first party is very special, as we’re opening the doors to TuneCore Artists who will be hanging out in Austin this week. We’re encouraging you to come by and mingle with TuneCore’s staff, connect and ask us questions, and of course, hear some great music!

RSVP via Do512 here!

Below, read about and listen to all of the awesome artists who will be helping us set the tone. Hope to see you out there!

Trevor Wesley
trevor wesley

Some artists aim to bring classic crooning soul over a more modern sound, and Trevor Wesley is one who does it with great success. A product of Los Angeles who was raised by a top Hollywood camera operator, Wesley traded in his dreams of being an actor and went on to write and produce with artists such as Ne-Yo, Wale, Dionne Warwick, 98 Degrees, and even perform backing vocals for Stevie Wonder. Check out his latest, “Chivalry Is Dead” below:

grayshot_Lead Image

Grayshot is an alternative pop three-piece consisting of brothers Aaron and Christian Ankrum and drummer Reese Kling. Traveling down to Austin from Minneapolis, the band will be showcasing cuts from their forthcoming follow up full length, Borders (April 1st). They’ve supported touring acts like The Boxer Rebellion, Switchfoot, and Empires, on top of  landing sync placements in Brooklyn Nine Nine, CBS College Football, and many more.

A member of Chicago’s indie hip hop ‘Savemoney Crew’ alongside Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa, Towkio is an exciting young MC whose single “Heaven Only Knows” helped make him a familiar face last April. Towkio combines his influences in hip hop with soul/R&B and jazz to make music that is at times undeniably bouncy and fun, and at other times deep and introspective. Hear the aforementioned single from his 2015 mixtape .Wav Theory below.

Brooklyn trio Lazyeyes formed in 2012, and began putting in their dues quickly, playing venues all around the borough and beyond. Their shoegaze/dream pop/garage rock tunes garnered attention from Stereogum, NME, Noisey and other hot press outlets, and they even turned heads at Burger Records, who reissued their sophomore EP from 2015. Lazyeyes is embarking on a tour to SXSW 2016 and back with fellow Brooklyn buzz rockers Beverly.

Baby E

Baby E (born Ethan Lowery) is a hip hop artist and producer from Pensacola, FL whose been releasing music since 2010. It was just last year, though, when his single “Finessin” blew up after receiving the remix treatment from Kevin Gates and Lil Bibby, resulting shortly thereafter in a Young Money Records signing. Baby E’s written and produced for artists such as Miley Cyrus, Juicy J, Pitbull and more, and he’s currently readying his debut release.

Lena Fayre

Lena Fayre is an LA-based pop artist who was named one of Rolling Stones’ Artists To Watch at age 19. With two EPs, a full length album and a follow-up on the way in 2016, Lena’s racked up Spotify streams and YouTube views in the millions, and has had her music licensed on hit CW show The Vampire Diaries. She’ll be making her second trip down to Austin to showcase her exciting new music and we’re psyched to have her joining our party!

“Blondfire is Erica Driscoll. Her ethereal, confident vocals and ineffable style  brought the band great acclaim and a worldwide fan base that has garnered   more than 7 million combined plays on Spotify and Youtube, with the 2014   breakout album “Young Heart” (featuring the alternative hit “Where the Kids Are”).”

Flight of Ryan
Flight of Ryan

“Flight of Ryan is a four-piece electro-pop rock outfit that draws musical inspiration from an array of artists, ranging from modern pop acts (Jimmy Eat World, Passion Pit, Death Cab for Cutie), to 60’s psychedelic rock (The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin). The group is also influenced heavily by a variety of writers, philosophers, directors, and artists.  All members have an active roll in decision-making as it pertains to the group, be it creative of otherwise.”
